Dave Townsend

David was born in Chicago and raised in Romeoville, Illinois. He grew up with four siblings and attended church every Sunday. He joined the United States Marines Corps in June 1977. He served 3.5 years in the Marines and received an honorable discharge in December 1980. His life changed while serving in the Marines on the Island of Okinawa when he met a ministry called The Navigators in January 1979. A sergeant in the barracks introduced him to Christ, and he accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior.

In 1981, after leaving the Marines, he continued his training with The Navigators In Okinawa, where he stayed with Pete and Hana McKay for six months to begin his discipleship training. He returned to the States in June 1981 and moved to Tacoma, Washington to join the Navigator ministry with Cecil and Thelma Davidson. God used Dave to build The Navigators singles ministry at Ft. Lewis Army Post.

In 1986 Dave came officially on staff with The Navigators and received an overseas assignment to Yokota Air Force Base, Japan assigned to develop the singles ministry.  He returned to the States in July 1988. He took a staff assignment with The Navigators at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, until he resigned from The Navigators.

In August 2011 Dave and Hiroko pioneered the non-profit (501C3) organization of Faith Warrior Ministry.  He has continued to serve in the director’s role of Faith Warrior Ministry. These past years they have continued to do a discipleship ministry through their home and on Camp Pendleton.

Dave met his wife Hiroko at the Yokota base chaplain's office in Japan. In 1989, they married in Japan and Hiroko moved to California. They have two grown sons, Joshua and Lucas. They love to spend time with their dad on building projects and outdoor activities.

Hiroko Townsend

Hiroko was born in Hekinan, Japan. She lived with two younger brothers. She graduated from Aichi Shukutoku Jr. College, in Nagoya, Japan. She met a Canadian missionary as her professor in college. Hiroko taught her how to play the Koto and Susan taught her the Bible. After two and a half years of Bible study, she received Christ.

In Japan, she worked in Toyota Engineering Department as a bilingual secretary and taught English and Japanese. While she worked at Yokota Air Force base, Tokyo, she met Dave, got married in 1989 and moved to California.

While they raised their two sons, she got a master’s degree in linguistics at San Diego State University. She now teaches Japanese in various colleges as a part-time faculty.

For over 35 years, Dave and Hiroko have had many Marines living in their home. Hiroko has been cooking for them as well as for the ministry peoples at the weekly Friday nights prayer meeting, Bible study nights and weekend stays. She also meets some girls for one-on-one discipleship and leads church women’s Bible studies.

Bryon Almeda

Bryon grew up in central California and joined the Marine Corps when he was 19. While in boot camp, he placed His faith in Jesus Christ as His Savior. During his 21-year Marine Corps career, Bryon enjoyed discipleship and fellowship in a variety of para-church and church ministry settings. He served at Camp Pendleton three separate times; each time being invested in the ministry that would become Faith Warrior Ministry.

Bryon married Holly in 2006, and they have since added two beautiful daughters to their family. He retired from the Marines in 2019 and moved to Rio Rancho, New Mexico where he serves as the Discipleship Pastor at Faith Church Rio Rancho. He is passionate about helping new and young believers grow in their understanding of God’s Word and encouraging them to develop an enduring faith in God.

Bryon has a BA in Communication from the University of Colorado, a MA in Theology from Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary, and he is currently pursuing a MA in Pastoral Counseling, also through Liberty. He enjoys hanging out with his girls, reading good books, developing his newly acquired fly-fishing “skills” (or lack thereof), and considers himself an avid sports fan (through which the Lord continues to keep him humble as he cheers for the Raiders and the A’s).

Dave Yumen

Dave Yumen was born and raised on a farm on Maui, Hawaii in a traditional Buddhist family. He attended University of Washington on an NROTC scholarship where he met The Navigators and gave his life to Christ. He graduated with a BS in Civil Engineering in June 1975 and reported to the USS Bradley (FF-1041) in Long Beach in February 1976.

After his ship moved to San Diego, he got involved with The Navigators and remained involved throughout his active duty years. In September 1982 he joined The Navigator staff, and then was assigned to minister at NAS Whidbey Island in Washington State. While there he married Janet Nagata in September 1988. In June 1995, they moved to the San Diego area where they minister to Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen.

Dave retired from the Navy Reserve in 2005 with the rank of Captain. They have two children, Christopher who is a senior at Point Loma Nazarene University and Kristi who is a sophomore at Biola University.

Matthew Sorensen

Matt grew up in the suburbs outside of Detroit, MI. He enlisted in the Army in 2002 and served two deployments during his 4-year enlistment. While on active duty, Matt was discipled by The Navigators at Fort Campbell, KY. After his enlistment, Matt moved to Oceanside where he became involved with the Navigators and later Faith Warrior Ministry. Matt continues to be involved in his local church and with Faith Warrior Ministry. Matt currently resides in Laguna Hills, CA with his new wife Jenni.

Mr. Steve Dunn

Steve is married to his wife Carolyn and is located in San Diego, CA. They have two grown sons, Nathanael and Josh. Steve spent his entire 36 year business career at IBM in various sales and marketing roles. While working at IBM in San Diego, Steve was a Client Relationship Manager for the manufacturing and pharmaceutical/biotech industries managing strategic accounts such as QUALCOMM, Callaway Golf, Watson Pharmaceuticals, Invitrogen (now Fischer Scientific), and Sanyo.

Since retiring in 2017, Steve has dedicated himself to public service and church ministry. He and his wife also mentor couples in the church on personal finance from a biblical perspective. In 2020, Steve joined the Board of Directors of Live My Potential as a founding board member.

SUPPORT OUR MINISTRY

Hiroko and I are very grateful for the prayers, friendships, partnerships and financial support that made Faith Warrior Ministry an instrument that God can use for His glory.

"rather offer yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness."

Rom 6:13b
